Rei Kawakubo founded Comme des Garçons in Tokyo in 1969. For over 50 years, the brand has been about disrupting norms. Deconstructing silhouettes. Breaking rules.
Unfortunately for your wardrobe, that includes the rules of standard sizing.
If you are used to buying Stone Island, Y-3, or Rick Owens, you know your size. You are a Medium. You buy a Medium. It fits.
Comme des Garçons Play is different.
Because it is designed and manufactured in Japan, it follows a Japanese sizing stricture. The cuts are higher in the armhole. The chests are narrower. The length is shorter.
The Golden Rule
If you take nothing else away from this guide, remember this:
Size up one full size from your standard US/AU fit.
If you are a True Medium in Nike or Stüssy, you are a Large in CDG Play. If you prefer an oversized, boxy fit (like a Fear of God look), you might even need to size up two times.
Don't guess. We have measured the inventory. Here is the raw data.
1. T-Shirts (Short & Long Sleeve)
Note: The fit is slim. The cotton is high quality but has minimal stretch.
2. Hoodies
Note: CDG Hoodies are made from a structured polyester or cotton blend. They do not "bag out" over time like cheap fleece.
3. Cardigans (Unisex / Ladies Fit)
Note: This range runs smaller and shorter. Ideal for a cropped look or traditional women's sizing.
4. Cardigans (Men’s Fit)
Note: This specific cut features broader shoulders and longer sleeves.
The Verdict
Measure your favorite T-shirt. Lay it flat. Measure pit-to-pit (Chest).
Compare it to the table above.
If you are between sizes, go up. It is always better to have a relaxed fit than a piece you cannot wear.
